Our Prayer Ministry for 2017

Our Prayer Ministry Report for 2017

At the beginning of 2017 the elders of Crystal Park Baptist Church Benoni chose several ministries we wanted to focus on through 2017. We wanted to: 1.) Develop the leadership capacity of our woman, 2.) Deepen our discipleship through small groups, 3.) Extend our prayer ministry throughout the whole church and 4.) Stabilise our children’s ministry.

And we have seen prayer become a part of the normal rhythm of Crystal Park Baptist Church Benoni over the past year in these particular ways:

Weekly Prayer Guide

Each week Gideon compiles a list of prayers items. We pray for a local church we are connected to in South Africa from Sola 5 or the Baptist Northern Association, an unreached people group as a mission focus, for our missionaries, Sammy Leballo at Moletsane Baptist Church Soweto, Chris Mnguni at Grace Baptist Church Daveyton and Caleb and Ruth in a Middle Eastern country, a national or local leader in government and specific needs of our members. These requests are posted to our Facebook Page (without the member prayer requests), to corporate prayer leaders for use on Sunday, made available to the Sunday Morning Prayer Ministry and emailed out to our members.

Sunday Morning Prayer Ministry

On Sunday Morning Molly together with Zanele, Margi, Maurice, Nan, Hanna, Liezl and Gideon together with a growing number of other members pray before the morning service. We pray for the teaching, the fellowship, the worship and the evangelism. This year we were able to equip each of the key leaders with a copy of John MacArthur’s At the Throne of Grace, a collection of prayers. We are seeing this ministry growing well in numbers and we’re greatly encouraged.

Corporate Prayers

Every fortnight our elders lead corporate prayers during our morning and evening service. The intention is to demonstrate mature Biblical prayer to our people so that fathers are equipped to pray at home and mothers are equipped to pray with children. This is also an opportunity for unity as we pray together according in one spirit. We are also delighted by how prayer is a focus in many of weekly Bible studies.

Quarterly Evening Prayer Services

Prayer Ministry

This year we have had 3 corporate evening prayer services. This happens during the course of a normal evening service however we have fewer songs, a shorter message and then we spend the last 30 minutes of the service broken up into smaller groups to pray for specific needs. The intention is to get more of our people exposed to praying in the body.

Combined Prayers

Gideon together with Hanna was able to join like minded churches at Bethany Baptist Church in Pretoria this year for a time teaching on the subject of prayer and combined corporate prayer (you can download the sermons here: Session 1, Jonathan Holdt, Session 2, Doug Van Meter and Session 3, Willem Bronkhorst). We’re hoping to join these churches again in the future as this is a wonderful testimony to our unity in Christ and dependency upon Him. This year again we have sent out a letter to local churches to articulate a key prayer requests. Over the years the Lord has answered these requests in most wonderful ways and we keenly look forward to seeing His hand move once again.

Valley of Vision

Prayer Ministry

We approached Banner of Truth and requested copies of Valley of Vision, a collection of prayers drawn from the writings of the Puritans. They donated enough copies for us to distribute one to each of our members. Our desire is that this resource is used to enrichen personal devotions and family devotions so that as a church we grow in maturity in this area.

Ministry Needs

We need more of our members to see prayer as an opportunity for fruitful ministry. You can join the prayer team by speaking to Gideon or Molly and coming to our quarterly evening prayer services.
