Prayer or Bible Reading?
When asked, “What is more important: Prayer or Reading the Bible?” I ask, “What is more important: Breathing in or Breathing out?”Charles Spurgeon
We love quoting Spurgeon at Crystal Park Baptist Church Benoni. Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892) was the most popular preacher of his time and is known as “the Prince of Preachers.” Before the age of 20, he became pastor of the New Park Street Chapel. Within a few weeks, many conversions resulted and the church building could not accommodate the crowds. Eventually, the Metropolitan Tabernacle was built to house the huge church. Spurgeon’s sermons were powerful and direct, but also contain elements of humour. He was a pastor, evangelist, and careful expositor of Scripture. He was unashamedly a Calvinist and a Baptist. He attacked both hyper-Calvinism and Arminian theology. He accused evangelical Anglicans of hypocrisy for continuing to use the Anglican baptismal service found in the Book of Prayer, even though they did not believe in baptismal regeneration. He also accused Baptists of teaching modernist theology, eventually withdrawing from the Baptist Union.
