If God requires of the sinner, dead in sin, that he should take the first step, then he requires just that which renders salvation as impossible under the gospel as it was under the law, since man is as unable to believe as he is to obey.Charles Spurgeon
We love quoting Spurgeon at Crystal Park Baptist Church Benoni.
Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892) was the most popular preacher of his time and is known as “the Prince of Preachers.” Before the age of 20, he became pastor of the New Park Street Chapel. Within a few weeks, many conversions resulted and the church building could not accommodate the crowds. Eventually, the Metropolitan Tabernacle was built to house the huge church.
Spurgeon’s sermons were powerful and direct, but also contain elements of humour. He was a pastor, evangelist, and careful expositor of Scripture.
He was unashamedly a Calvinist and a Baptist. He attacked both hyper-Calvinism and Arminian theology. He accused evangelical Anglicans of hypocrisy for continuing to use the Anglican baptismal service found in the Book of Prayer, even though they did not believe in baptismal regeneration. He also accused Baptists of teaching modernist theology, eventually withdrawing from the Baptist Union.
